One Health recognises the fundamental relationship between human health, animal health and ecosystem health.
For Avenir Vert, this creates an important new application for the environmental intelligence infrastructure we are developing across the DRC.
Working with scientific, health and technology partners, we aim to combine continuous environmental monitoring with local knowledge and specialist research to better understand how environmental change affects both ecosystems and people.
Our initial focus is on two areas where this intersection is particularly important.
Forest & Peatland Intelligence
The forests and peatlands of the Congo Basin represent one of the world's most important stores of natural carbon.
Continuous ground-based measurement can complement satellite observation by providing local environmental data from beneath the canopy — helping researchers, conservation programmes and climate-finance initiatives better understand changing conditions on the ground.
This creates the potential for stronger Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV), more credible environmental evidence and greater confidence in high-integrity carbon markets.
Environmental Health & Early Warning
Changes in forests and other ecosystems can alter interactions between wildlife, people and the environment.
By monitoring environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, air quality and other local indicators, distributed sensing networks can contribute another layer of evidence to environmental-health research and emerging early-warning systems.
Working alongside organisations with specialist biomedical and epidemiological expertise, Avenir Vert sees significant potential to explore how environmental intelligence can support the One Health approach in the DRC.
TECHNOLOGY IN THE FIELD
From Satellite Observation to Ground Truth
Satellites provide an extraordinary view of the Congo Basin from above.
But some of the most important environmental changes happen beneath the canopy and within communities.
Through our technology partnership with Edgeliot, Avenir Vert is developing the capability to deploy low-cost, connected environmental sensors in remote and challenging environments.
These systems can provide continuous measurements of environmental conditions and transmit information for analysis without depending solely upon periodic field surveys.
Combined with satellite imagery, research data and local observation, this creates something much more powerful: a richer, continuous picture of environmental change.
